Galaxies are large systems of stars and interstellar matter, typically containing several million to some trillion stars, of masses between several million and several trillion times that of our Sun, of an extension of a few thousands to several 100,000s light years, typically separated by millions of light years distance. They come in a variety of types: Spiral, lenticular, elliptical and irregular.

Emission nebulae are vast clouds of gas that are gravitationally collapsing and forming stars. Massive stars radiate ultraviolet light which causes the nebula to glow. Emission nebulae tend to be red in color because of the abundance of hydrogen but additional colors, such as blue and green, can be produced by the atoms of other elements, but hydrogen is almost always the most abundant.
